SLATE
Slate is generally metamorphic rock, soft to hard in nature and characterized by the
presence of cleavages along which it can be easily split into the thinner tiles. It is formed
under relatively low temperature and pressure from layers of mud found in oceans and
riverbeds that have been hardened by compaction and cementation. Heat and pressure
creates the partings, or "slaty cleavage" that give slate its characteristics. Slate contains
minerals such as quartz, chlorite and mica. Different sizes are obtained depending upon
natural cracks in the deposits. Uniform thickness is not possible unless these stones are
calibrated and honed. It comes in a variety of colors, including black, gray, green,
red and purple.
Slate's durability and low maintenance make it ideal for a wide range of uses in interior and
exterior designs. It is mainly used for cladding, flooring and roofing.
