TRAVERTINE
Travertine is a sedimentary stone formed from the accumulation of organic elements,
such as mud, seashells and bones of sea creatures on ocean and lake floors. This sediment is
buried by other sediment and, after millions of years of pressure; the particles become cemented
together to form solid rock, which is limestone. Travertine is formed in hot springs, where
the heated, pressurized water dissolves the limestone. As the water evaporates, layers of dissolved
limestone and other minerals are left behind, giving travertine its banded appearance.
As trapped gases escape the stone, crystals are formed in the cavities forming the holes that are
characteristic of travertine.
Travertine evokes a feeling of antiquity in your house. The variety of shapes and sizes offered within
the travertine family are truly remarkable. It is available predominately in earth tones ranging from
cream to reddish variations. Travertine is most commonly "honed", a finish that leaves the surface
smooth and non-reflective. Tumbled travertine is commonly used in shower and backsplash
applications. Tumbling refers to the "distressed" texture achieved by tumbling natural stones, giving
the stone surface a worn, aged look. Travertine is a versatile stone that can be used on a variety of surfaces
including flooring, showers, bathroom vanities, tub decks, backsplashes, and fireplaces.
